It was an honour creating a Special Edition 12” book artwork for the full catalogue of Pixies’ frontman Black Francis. Right off the bat, we had a challenge to overcome: limited photography and varied album art styles that didn’t align as a cohesive concept. Black Francis notoriously dislikes his image in photography, so we needed to find a way to connect with his fans without showing his face.
To turn this into an opportunity, we found conceptual inspiration in the pixelated sleeve for Black Francis’ record ‘Threshold Apprehension’. We created an abstract pixelated mosaic style that we applied throughout the LP book imagery to give the catalogue an artistically intriguing and coherent look. With Pantone Gold and Copper accents throughout, there’s a tone of desirability that works seamlessly for this iconic musician.
